Recording a video

Panopto can record videos in a variety of ways, such as from a web browser, from the Panopto client, or from Microsoft Teams. For the purposes of this training guide we will look at recording a video within a web browser.

In the top left of your screen after logging into Panopto, there is a button labeled "Create". Click this, then click "Panopto Capture".

This will open up the recording screen. By default you may find that it is just showing your camera for now, don't worry we will be changing this shortly.

From here we can add all the different things we want Panopto to capture. We're going to start by configuring our audio. Click the button labeled "audio".

This will open up the Audio configuration menu. You should see a list of audio devices attached to your computer here, and if you speak you will see which devices are active and picking your audio up. Make sure to select a device that is showing a green bar when you speak. Once you are happy with the audio device selected, press the X button at the bottom

Next let's have a look at configuring our video. Click the button labeled "Video"

From here you can select your preferred camera (if you have more than one) or add additonal cameras if you are recording multiple people at once. Once you are happy with your selection, press the x button at the bottom once more.

Then we can select a screen or application to be recorded. Click the button labeled "Screens and Apps"

This will open some options on what you want to share.

"Entire Screen" will record everything that is on that particular monitor. This is useful if you are recording something where you need to switch between different programs within the recording. You can also select whether to share your system audio here.

"Window" will record a specific program. This is good for recordings that will only use a single program.

"Chrome Tab" will record a specific tab on your chrome browser. Good for recording a web based service.

For this training guide, I will be selecting "Window". From here I will select Powerpoint as I wish to record the presentation I have made. After selecting this I click the button labeled "share".

Now we have got our composition together, we are ready to record! Simply press the big red record button to get started. Don't worry if you make a mistake whilst recording, we will learn to edit that later in another guide. The program will give you a 5 second countdown before the recording begins. Once you are finished, press the big red button once more and it will bring you to the publishing screen.

Here you have a few options. You can name your video whatever you like, by default it will use the date and time the video was recorded. You can also add tags to help with search functionality. Consider putting the relevant department this video is for as a tag! You can also share the video here as well. Where it says "Share this video" you can put in the name of another user or group within panopto, or simply put someones email address. For now let's press the button labeled "Manage Access".

This will take you to the settings page for your video. The amount of options here can be a bit intimidating at first, but we will cover them in future guides to make sure you know how it all works. For now we are going to look at the basic viewing options. By default a video is only shared with specific people we select. We are going to change that here so anyone with a link to the video can view it, regardless if they are a Panopto user. Let's start by pressing the "Change" button under "Who can access this video".

From here another menu will open, we are going to click "Public (unlisted)". This will allow anyone with the link to view the video.

Now we can share that link. You can also select a start time for the link if you want to share a specific part of the video with someone. Just click "Copy Link".

This concludes our Panopto Basics training guide. If you need further training, please keep an eye out for future training guides, or contact IT for a more advanced session.
