Notifications in Teams

Introduction

Unfortunately, notifications in Teams is disabled by default. If you want to receive notifications, you need to set them up manually.

There has been some indication from Microsoft that this is being reviewed, but at the moment, notifications need to be set up.

Enabling notifications in Chat

1. Click on the Profile Picture in the top right hand side of the Desktop app.

2. Select Settings

3 - Select notifications.

4 - Select the Settings that you want for Chat.

Personal mentions - this will notify you if somebody @mentions you in a chat. I recommend this is enabled for banner and email.

Channel mentions - this will notify you if channels that you are a member of are mentioned.

Team mentions - this will notify you if Teams that you are a member of are mentioned.

Chat mentions - this will notify you if you get a chat message. I recommend this is enabled for banner and email.

5 - The banner will pop up for a few seconds in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.

Unfortunately - notifications need to be enabled for every Channel in a Team.

6 - In the example below, there is a team called Compliance, and a number of Channels in the Compliance Team - General (every Team has a default channel), AEO, CMMC, Cyber Essentials and GDPR. Notifications need to be enabled for each channel.

7 - To enable notifications for a Channel - Click on the Channel that you want to enable notifications for,

8 - Choose the notification Settings you require from the drop down menu.

9 - Choosing Only Show in Feed will give you a notification in the Activity Log in the top left hand side of the desktop

Choosing Banner and Feed, will give you a notification in the Activity Log, and a Banner in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop.

The Activity log is actually a notification log - it only shows activity where notifications have been enabled!

@Mentions

If you write a chat message, or make a post in a channel, and want to make sure that it comes to the attention of a particular person, you can @mention them.

From within a post type @ and as you start typing suggestions will be populated.

The actual nature of the notification will depend upon the individual's settings, but as a minimum it will appear be flagged in the Activity section.
